Retro Crush #003: Angie Dickinson

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

Name: Angie Dickinson
Date of Birth: September 30, 1931 (age 80)
Home Town: Kulm, North Dakota, United States
Occupations: Actress
Prime Years: 1954–1980

"When I started shooting Police Woman, someone asked me if I had ever  played a sleuth before. I said 'Yes, many times.' I thought they were asking me if I ever played a slut. I didn't know what a sleuth was."

Check out that body! A lot of people say our standard of what is "sexy" has changed over the years from curvaceous to toned. But it's hard argument to make that Angie Dickinson wasn't ahead of her time.

Dickinson has appeared in over 50 movie rolls and numerous TV shows. Although she started her acting career in the late 50's she really wasn't  looked at as a sex symbol until the early 70's. Dickinson aged well and by that time still looked like a knock out.

Her best move has to the Roger Corman directed "Big Bad Mama" (1974). She has three separate nude scenes, one full frontal [!] with Star Trek's William Shatner!

Angie Dickinson appeared on the March 1979 cover of the adult magazine High Society, with the promise of "nude photos inside." There were nude photos but they were just stills from the nudey shots she did for Big Bad Mama.

They don't even have a proper interview, it's just selected quotes from other interviews she has done. Not really worth tracking down unless your a completest.
.
There is an interesting black and white photo floating around which appears to be a very young Dickinson posing totally nude for a frontal shot. This still photograph can be had on ebay for about $10. It really does look like Angie circa late 50's when she was doing beauty pageants. It could be her or some nameless model of  the same period who looked a lot like her.

80 years old now and still not a bad looking great grandma! I would just dust the cobwebs out of the way and dig in!

The end of last week I bought some stuff online, the first of that stuff came in today. Have a look.

I'm just about ready to start tearing into my van, so what better place to
find inspiration for a custom interior than Van magazines from the
70's? I got these on ebay as usual, they sold for their normal going price
between $ 8- $10. I only buy four of these at a time. I just can't justify
spending $50 on magazines at any given time.

The MPC Sunrunner Model Kit. It's a 1977 Ford just like mine!

Scored this from an amazon.com marketplace
seller for $5, sealed.

Review: Champ Road

Thursday, February 16, 2012

Champ Road is a irregularly published magazine on Bosozoku culture. In Japan the term Bosozoku use to be used exclusively with outlaw Biker Gangs. Years ago a Japanese law was passed forbidding more than two motorcycles riding in any group or formation with in a close proximity. Believe it or not that put in end to Biker Gangs in Japan, they couldn't even ride down the street without being stopped by law enforcement and arrested.

Now the term Bosozoku refers to just about any kind of social misfit inclined to breaking the law. Bikers, Yankee's, and street thugs are all included.

The first half of this magazine is devoted to Bikers, since the restrictive law went into place most Bikers ride tandem with a friend or girl friend riding on the back of the bike. As you might of expected Harley Davidson's aren't high on the list of Japanese bikers.

What are is classic Japanese speed bikes tricked out with crazy fiberglass whale tails and lights. This would all make for funny joke fodder for American Bikers but in Japan if you see one of these bikes headed your way it's best to move on.

The second half of the magazine is devoted to Yankee's. Not westerners as you might think, but a Japanese guy/girl that's a little on the anti-social side. Yankee's identify themselves by not only the way they act but how they dress, and the cars they drive.

Yankee's bring a whole new meaning to custom van's look here to see what I mean. They do similar setups on their cars, take a look at some of the pictures found in this magazine.

Altogether an interesting magazine to flip through, a bit on the pricey side but it's a thick magazine. Get it here.

Flipping through an issue of Car Craft Magazine (May, 1975) I stumbled upon a couple of great ads. I thought I would share them here. As always, click the picture for a larger image.

Score: Magazines

Monday, January 2, 2012

It's been a while but I made my way to my local newsstand to buy a couple of magazines. I didn't find a lot out there I liked so I turned to the web and made like a pirate and downloaded a couple of publications as well. My reading list is below, with a few thoughts.

Blood & Thunder #18
For those who don't know Blood & Thunder is a great quarterly released magazine covering the new female Roller Derby cutler. This issue features profiles of junior leages, and lots of event coverage with great photography. Only $6, recommended.

Girls & Corpses vol.5 (winter)
An absurd alternative variety magazine featuring beautiful women with corpses. As sick as it sounds this really isn't a necrophiliac's Hustler, but more of a horror fans Maxim.

Ruckus (Nov. 2011)
When will the Maxim imitators cease to exist, I don't know. But as long as they keep turning them out, I'll keep buying the inferior copycats and feel ripped every time.

Prick Magazine (Oct, 09)
Although I did download this from the web, it wasn't in act of piracy. Prick magazine is a free e-publication in no doubt paid for by the numerous ads inside each issue. Still worth tracking down if your into the whole tattoo, piercing thing.

Werewolf TPB (Del Ray Books 2005)
Werewolf by Richard Corben is a collection of comics all written by Corben focusing on... you guessed it werewolves. Corben wrote for Eerie and Creepy for Warren back in the day so you know this collection is good. The only reason I downloaded this is because this particular volume is long out of print and fetches upwards of $50 a pop. At least that what I tell myself to get rid of the guilt.

Peterson's Vans & Pickups (Jan. 1979)
Great magazine featuring all sorts of automotive eye candy. Most in black and white but still a really great time capsule of the 70's not to mention wonderful inspiration if you are working on a van yourself. To bad the only place to get these is on ebay, they go for $7-$25 a piece, yes ouch.
